Chet Baker, mit bürgerlichem Namen Chesney Henry Baker Jr. (* 23. Dezember 1929 in Yale, Oklahoma; † 13. Mai 1988 in Amsterdam) war ein US-amerikanischer Jazzmusiker (Trompete, Flügelhorn), Sänger und Komponist. ... Baker hatte begonnen, Heroin, Kokain und Amphetamine zu mischen; unter Junkies wird diese Vorgehensweise „Speedball“ genannt. Am 13. Mai 1988, einem Freitag, fiel Chet Baker angeblich aus dem Fenster seines Zimmers im Prins Hendrik Hotel in Amsterdam. Er war sofort tot. Doch auch um seinen Tod ranken sich Legenden, wie jene, ein Drogendealer habe ihn aus dem Fenster gestoßen. Dafür gibt es allerdings keinen Beweis. Wahrscheinlicher ist vielmehr, dass er im Drogenrausch das Gleichgewicht verloren hat und gestürzt ist. Seinem letzten Pianisten Michel Graillier zufolge soll Baker des Hotels verwiesen worden sein. Weil er angeblich sein Instrument vergessen hatte, sei er die Regenrinne hochgeklettert und dabei abgestürzt. ...

This CD is a re-release of Chet Baker's complete September 1983 studio session in Brussels with a trio featuring guitarist Philip Catherine and bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. The session was first released on the French label Igloo (IGL034); however, all six tracks on this reissue by the Gambit label (Spain) have been carefully re-mastered employing the most current state-of-the art technology, and a comprehensive, informative 12-page booklet is also included. Gambit's reissue presents the original session comprising six (6) tracks but also includes a bonus track by the same trio performing a live, 10-minute plus version of Chet Baker's celebrated signature song, My Funny Valentine, in a European performance recorded during the spring of 1985.
