Art also gives me a way to justify my more embarrassing hobbies. I want to sew vaginal, womb-like forms out of lush smooth fabrics, I covet any excuse to wear curlers and crinoline, I fancy baking brownies and consequently, I need to work my abdominal muscles. As a contemporary artist, I can indulge in these guilty pleasures only if they can be defended conceptually. My main justification for succumbing to these physical urges has to do with the effect the portrayal of women in both popular culture and feminist art has on me, the way it attracts and repels me at the same time. In expressing my critique of both mass-produced femininity and the self-representation of 70s feminists (as well as by presenting myself as an antidote to those varying clichés) I get to bake my cake and eat it too.

Performance and Politics in the 1970s was a day of screenings, conversations and presentations which explored, recovered and communicated the history of performance art in London and the UK in the 1970s. Particular focus was given to the social and political environments in which experimental performance art emerged in the '70s. The event involved artists and arts organisations active at the time, as well as those making and facilitating work in the wake of these pioneers. ...

David Helbich (*Berlin 1973) -  artist; studied composition and philosophy in Amsterdam and in Freiburg/D; lives and works since 2002 in Brussels. He created various experimental works on stage, on page, online and in public space.
His trajectory moves between representative and interactive works, pieces and interventions, between conceptual work and actions. A recurrent interest is the understanding of an audience as active individuals and the search for an opening up of experiences in an artistically restricted space.

It presents feminist, gendercritical and queer performance art by over 120 artists and artist collectives from the 1960s to the beginning of the 1980s, as well as contemporary positions. The research focus is on Eastern and Western Europe, the Mediterranean and Middle East, the US and several countries in Latin America. On its route through Europe this temporary archive will continue to expand through local research and cooperation with art academies and universities. It will also be 'animated' through exhibitions, screenings, performances and discussions along the way, which will continuously contribute to the archive.
This web page is designed as a research tool providing information about all artists and activities in short summaries, pictures, texts and tags. It will continue to grow in sync with the ongoing exhibition and archive programme. ...

Terry Fox (* 3. Mai 1943 in Seattle, Washington; † 14. ...

"The idea is a beautiful inefficiency: a tiny but infinitely more affected audience," - Chris Colin, The New York Times
Imagine waking up to find yourself immersed in a performance that is all about you. Since 2001, Odyssey Works has been creating immersive, durational experiences for an audience of one. Our team is made up of artists in dozens of disciplines who study the life of one individual and use whatever means necessary to create intimate, meaningful performances that last days, weeks, or months, and occur not on a stage but interwoven with the life of our audience of one. The experiences are transformative; most of our participants change jobs, move, make new commitments to loved ones shortly after their Odysseys. ...
