Super 8 Picnic in a Hand collective is a Vilnius based metro group of young artists in general section. Filmmakers and others interested in creating, curating and showing super8, 8 and 16 mm format films in native Lithuania and around globe. System founded in 2008 as an independent artist’s research group on analog film possibilities, the collective soon became Super 8 Picnic in a Hand. In 2009 we change our open politic into closed 12 persons. The collective became sure and opened the deficit “Tree LAB” – an analog and experimental film lab, searching for connections with young active analog filmmakers around Europe. Motto: make a break do a break.

The Macuto Collective (TMC)
In our nostalgic view of Macuto, everyday is a weekend if not carnival and liquor stores are always open and people are always half naked.  In the streets, nothing is heard besides  laughter and flirtation, charrascas and cencerros and on the squares and beaches tits and butt cheeks that bounce to the rhythm of some son. A city where nothing is organized, where the only sport is dancing and the only school is the malecón....

Laboratorio Reversible is a collective based in Barcelona, oriented towards the creation, experimentation, thinking, spreading and conservation of analog film. A place of meeting and work that aims to generate a community and to encourage possible sinergies among the members of the group, and among non members that share our interests.
The collective is open to all kind of proposals concerning analog film without any distinction of cinematographic genre. One of the main focus of our interest is film as a trade, because of its character of manual labor as well as because of the material dimension of its production process. That is the reason why we want to keep alive the tools and the knowledge needed to work with analog cinema, in collaboration and coexistence with digital cinema practices. ...

Christopher May on the International Experimental Cinema Exposition and its soiree this Friday
By Robin Edwards Wed., Sep. 11 2013
There's something about celluloid that captures things no other medium can, explains Christopher May. So when he started noticing film festivals getting rid of their 16 mm projection, he decided to found the International Experimental Cinema Exposition, aka TIE. Along with experimental filmmaking icon Stan Brakhage, May started TIE in 2000 as an international experimental festival devoted solely to reels rather than digital projection...

8mm Cine Club (Wednesfield, West Midlands)
The club is a social event for people who would like an opportunity to watch their old cine film reels, but don’t have a decent projector to do so at home. It’s free, and is usually accompanied by refreshments of some kind, depending on the venue.
We started off by meeting monthly at Wednesfield Community Centre, and then ran an afternoon at Flatpack Festival in Birmingham. We are now continuing to run events as and when appropriate. They’ll be in different locations each time, and certainly less frequently than before. If you’d like to request we run an event near you, because you know there is a community of people with films, please do get in touch. ...

Revel-8 kicks off this year with its most exciting theme yet – Curiosity. It’s human nature to enquire and question, so this year Revel-8 invites filmmakers to be inquisitive and explore quirky, weird and down right curious characters, stories and styles, on a single cartridge of Super-8 film. Filmmakers resident in Australia are invited to respond creatively and innovatively to the theme of CURIOSITY, and to explore the genres of drama, documentary, experimental and animation. Films must be shot in sequence on just one cartridge of Super 8 film lasting just three and a half minutes - no processing allowed!

Vom 19.

Das Super8 Bootcamp will hier Abhilfe schaffen.

Preservation Project Films is a blog, website, and film production company that belongs to Ashley Maynor, a Super-8 enthusiast and award-winning documentarian, whose films and new media works have been exhibited around the country. Here, she offers up advice for those looking to preserve family archives and home movies and writes about her experience as an archivist, curator, and filmmaker.
http://www.preservationprojectfilms.com/

http://formemoriessakethemovie.com/

The Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) is a nonprofit
international association dedicated to the preservation and use of moving
image media. AMIA supports public and professional education and
fosters cooperation and communication among the individuals and
organizations concerned with the acquisition, preservation, description,
exhibition, and use of moving image materials.

Home Movie Day first commenced in August 2003 when a group of film archivists created a cultural outlet for the public display of private films. Similar gatherings have occurred annually worldwide. This diverse collection presents 22 amateur films, including a 16mm print of George Eastman and Thomas Edison documenting the use of Kodak's Kodacolor technology. It also contains films of utter anonymity, such as a Super 8 recording of carnival rides in action--the film's silver emulsion having decomposed so as to produce a psychedelic experience not unlike that of a kaleidoscopic acid rock video. If only commercially driven content such as America's Funniest Home Videos or "reality" TV were so curiously entertaining. Living Room Cinema's bits of personal history are engrossing because they were never intended for mass viewing. Spanning much of the last century, the films provide authentic voyeurism; conscious cinema verite this is not. Many of the clips are presented with optional commentary by various participants, family members, or discoverers of lost treasures. Alternatively, composer Donald Sosin provides original music scores recalling silent film-era accompaniment. Recommended for libraries serving film studies programs. (Eric Pasteur, Peoria P.L., IL, Library Journal. February 15, 2008)

Robbins Barstow, Home-Movie Maven, Dies at 91
By MARGALIT FOX
Published: November 13, 2010
Robbins Barstow, a Connecticut man who, movie camera whirring, documented every aspect of his family’s life for decades, yielding a vast body of work that formed the cornerstone of the recent home-movie revival and has lately garnered a huge following online, died on Nov. 7 at his home in Hartford. He was 91 and previously lived in Wethersfield, Conn. ...

In July 1956, the five-member Barstow family of Wethersfield, Connecticut, won a free trip to newly-opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in a nationwide contest. This 30-minute amateur documentary film tells the fabulous story of their fun-filled, dream-come-true, family travel adventure, filmed on the scene at Walt Disney's "Magic Kingdom" by Robbins Barstow.
In December 2008, "Disneyland Dream" was named to the National Film Registry by the Librarian of Congress.

"Super 8 films sure to surprise"
Event is 'about fun, not competition, says event founder
By Stephanie McKay, The Starphoenix June 3, 2015
When the organizers of One Take Super 8 say the word premiere, they mean it. It's important for directors to plan well and cross their fingers because they won't see their own film until it's screened to the public.
The event is back for its third year in Saskatoon. One Take Super 8 started in Regina 15 years ago and has since spread to places like Winnipeg, Fort Lauderdale and Montreal. In that time, nearly 1,000 new films have been created and exhibited.
http://www.thestarphoenix.com/entertainment/movie-guide/Super+films+sure+surprise/11104489/story.html

The One Take Super 8 Event began in 2000, with 20 filmmakers each shooting a single reel of Super 8 film, which then premiered to an audience without the filmmakers seeing their work beforehand. All the films were shown as shot, no cuts, no splices. The popularity of this non-competitive festival has allowed it to return each year with more filmmakers participating. To date over 750 films have been created for the One Take Super 8 Event!

"Rendering the familiar foreign, in Super 8" BY SEAN EGAN (June 3, 2015, Posted by: Scott Stiffler)
“Say you’ve walked by that building a million times, but never saw the sunlight glint that way, or that little piece of graffiti, or the man who is always standing in the window,” Stephanie Gray hypothesizes. “It makes you think of the many stories we don’t know, and how you thought you knew what that was all about, but you were wrong.”
Gray, a poet and filmmaker based in Queens, is not content to simply tell a clear-cut narrative. She has different, perhaps more ambitious goals in mind — to challenge the ways in which audiences view the world around them. This tendency will be made clear June 12-14, when Anthology Film Archives presents a three-night, three-program retrospective of her short film work. ...

Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine
The performance starts slowly. The light of a 16mm film projector, softly dimmed, bounces off the screen. The quiet whirr of the projector’s mechanism fills the room as the machine gradually increases its speed. A second moving image appears on the screen, superimposed on the first, and a slowly rising static drone joins the hum of projectors. The image flickers slightly and then it starts to burn in the projector’s gate, bubbling away from the heat of the bulb. The screen fills with the pop of a blinding light that sets off a sonic fireburst, and the performance tumbles into full swing.
For the next forty minutes, La Cellule d’Intervention Metamkine, a live performance trio from Grenoble, fuses the worlds of expanded cinema and improvisatory music in a visceral live experience, reminiscent of the sound and light shows of the 1960s and ’70s that attempted to go beyond the possibilities of a single image and a single screen. The two projectionists in Metamkine move between eight 16mm film projectors and an assortment of filters, lights, and visual tricks, building layers of images on top of each other. Shadows of projectors are cast onto the screen, film celluloid melts and live chemical processing of film stock induces visual transformations. Meanwhile, a musician uses radio waves, electrical hums, and pre-recorded tape loops to both react to and spur on the filmic melee. Contact mikes attached to short-wave radios, electrical transformers, and various metal objects send sound waves through Revox tape recorders and Korg synthesizers to bend them into new shapes and pulses. At times, the music builds to a drone that matches a calmer onscreen section; at other times, the three performers produce a visual and sonic cacophony, intensely prodding one another in a growling and sputtering mechanical reverie. Sonically mirroring the actions of the projectionists, the musician deftly moves from one sound to the other, negotiating his mixing board to control the various electrical sounds he produces with his equipment. ...

Super 8, referenced here by the name of the Festival, is the spirit that guides the event. This home cinema format embodies the characteristics of the movies shown here. A popular, personal and analog format that besides preserving our recent memory, allowed to flourish the necessary independence and freedom for the first (and risky) steps of world-renowned filmmakers today, and has benn an esencial parte of the change of the paradigm of the film work methods, as it allowed the filmmaker to work independently. (S8) combines, with its allegorical name, a threefold purpose: to bring together the experimental and avant-garde spirit – with unlimited formats – embodied by these Super 8 and 16mm pioneering works, to account for the plenty of filmmakers who continue to use the small film format in the XXI century and also to review this recent film history making an essential memory and retrieval effort.

The Super 8 Web Portal By Jürgen Lossau (pledged of €20,000 goal, May 12 2017)
Super 8 is back! Our international Web Portal will give you always the latest information. And you can watch 1,000 small format films. ... Super 8 has been quiet for 30 years, but a small worldwide following of around 2,500 filmmakers is keeping the medium alive. Following traditional film photography, instant photos and vinyl records, this medium is now poised to take a ride on the retro express. Kodak has introduced a new Super 8 camera and reintroduced Ektachrome color reversal film. Ferrania (Italy) and Adox (Germany) are creating new film stocks for Super 8. Other companies are also researching and developing Super 8 cameras and film. The time has come to provide an information resource to support these developments. ...
