"Super 8 lab goes against the grain: The Daylesford duo keeping a lost format alive" (January 3, 2015)
Super 8 was once the filmmaking format for millions, home-moviemakers and experimental artists alike. But it hasn't disappeared; it's a small yet quietly flourishing niche market, and Daylesford, in regional Victoria, is home to the only dedicated Super 8 lab in the southern hemisphere.
Super 8 is a narrow-gauge film format created 50 years ago. It was popular because it was easy to use, cheap, quick, and aesthetically appealing; the sound quality was good, and when projected it looked much better than the video of the time. But the advent of digital technology changed everything, for the product, for companies that made and processed film, and for people who still wanted to use it.
Filmmakers Richard Tuohy and  Dianna Barrie set up nanolab in response to a need. ...

Process Reversal is a collective which seeks to preserve film through research, resource development, and film productions focused on advancing the aesthetics and technology of the medium itself. In this sense, the times that we are facing with film today are in fact the most exciting opportunities in the history of the medium — as the film industry collapses all around us, we are being left with a chance to re-invent the medium in an image that was neither intended nor desired by the commercialism of the medium; one that explores new ways of seeing, new ways of hearing, and new ways of speaking about film.

Chrome Brew - making your own E-6 from raw chemicals
by Derek Watkins
The Kodak Ektachrome E-6 process has been with us for around twenty years now - which in its own way says that Kodak really did get it right. Not only did E-6 quickly become the standard against which all other processes were judged, it also took over as the universal process for colour reversal films.
One advantage of the E-6 process is that it is relatively easy to handle in the home darkroom. Indeed, you don't even need a darkroom to be able to process your own reversal films. ...

Side-by-Side: ECN-2 vs. C-41 Processing for Kodak Vision3 Film
Posted on July 24, 2023 by Wesley King
In the past several years, as film prices rise and film choices diminish, it's become quite common to tap into 35mm film stocks that are ordinarily sold for motion picture use, and adapt them for still photography. Nudging us all down that path are dozens of companies (and even individuals) who are buying the motion picture stocks in bulk, cutting them down, loading them into 135 roll film cassettes, and selling them at retail, or via online marketplaces. While Eastman 5222, also known as Kodak Double-X, is a common black-and-white motion picture film that's long been packaged and used for still photography, the practice is increasingly popular in the past few years for color films, namely Kodak's Vision3 stocks. These films, however, have some unique attributes that make them unsuitable for most lab development, and challenging for home processing as well. Among them is the fact that technically speaking, they're designed for the ECN-2 process (and chemicals), not the more common C-41 process of developing standard color negative films for still photography. In this article, we dive into the differences, and what you need to know to get great results from these films. ...
