"Where's the Party At?" Bendable, Open DIY Sampler Brings 8-bit Back
By Peter Kirn
Todd Bailey's "Where's the Party At?" wants to return to a simpler, glitchier era of sampling. When CDM spoke to Hank Shocklee, Public Enemy's legendary producer, he talked about how those artists really preferred earlier samplers because of, not in spite of, their flaws. And because lo-fi is a little easier to pull off, this makes a great project.

[HowTo] Turn a Raspberry Pi into a DIY Virtual Instrument with SamplerBox | Phazerville (12.11.2019)Here's how I turned my Raspberry Pi into a DIY sample-based multi-instrument solution for live performance! From 808 drums to synth leads, to fully multi-sampled grand piano, you can play them all with a standard MIDI keyboard. I wanted a way to easily incorporate virtual instruments into my live-looping workflow without running VSTi's on a laptop, and SamplerBox was the perfect solution.
I'm using the Raspberry Pi 3 (with HiFiBerry DAC+, currently unused) with an Akai MPKmini mkII and a Focusrite Scarlett sound interface in conjunction with my Kaoss Pad for a standalone live-looping setup - no laptop necessary! This will also work on the Raspberry Pi 4. (Pi 2 may work, but probably not as smoothly... please share your experiences!)

A True Rompler (1): Raw Digital Audio
Introduction
I wanted to make a device that plays back digital audio, without the use of any programming or a microcontroller or a computer. In other words, the most basic rompler, as a hardware-only device.

Overview
A 32KB EPROM is used to store some digital audio. A counting circuit is used to sequentially (or otherwise) recall the samples from the memory byte-by-byte. These bytes are then converted to an analog waveform, ready for amplification and listening.

Preparing and Transferring the Audio
I sequenced a two bar loop at 240 bpm. This equals 2 seconds of audio. This was then converted to a sample quality of 8 bit / 16,384 Hz, so that two seconds' worth fits into the 32KB memory space exactly. ... (Sebastian Tomczak)

Virtual Radio Playback (Sample Player)
https://www.modulargrid.net/e/music-thing-modular-radio-music

This is not a radio. It is a sample player that behaves like a radio.

A digital way to simulate radio-powered compositions by John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Don Buchla's voltage-controlled radio experiments. It uses a teensy3.1 to play files from a SD card to simulate a voltage controlled AM/FM/Shortwave/Time Travel radio.

It is designed to be a source of unexpected audio, not a drum loop player or a sample mangler.
Like a radio, this module works on a series of banks and stations. Each of the 16 banks can contain many different stations. Each station is .raw audio file stored in a bank directory on the SD card. Choose a bank by pressing and holding the RESET switch. Choose a station by turning the STATION knob or plugging a voltage into TUNE.

Up to 32gb storage, 16 banks of 75 channels each
Files stored as headerless .raw wav files
Customise the module by editing settings.txt on the SD Card

Build Your Own Wave Player with CD Audio Quality
This project is a cost-effective implementation of Wave Player with CD Audio Quality which is able to play all kinds of WAVE files. The MCU I used in this project is ATmega128, but it is optional. This system is able to process 8-bit / 16-bit Mono / Stereo Wave Files with sample rate less than or equal to 44100Hz. The hardware is very simple, a simple resistor voltage dividing circuit is built to combine two 8-bit PWM output to 16-bit DAC. ...

Teensy Drum Sample Player (05.11.2018)
Learning how to use Teensy audio libraries and the audio board to generate drum synth sounds and play back percussion wav samples.
Using the online Teensy audio design GUI, the skeleton of the sketch can be auto-generated after visual audio blocks are dragged onto the workspace and inputs/outputs are connected with patch cables.
Once the Arduino code is exported, the settings for those audio blocks can be controlled in the sketch.
WAV files containing audio samples can be converted into hex data, compiled into the sketch, and played back from memory.

Electrosmith - Daisy Patch

Eurorack Sampler Module Comparison
Martin Doudoroff
This is an exhaustive comparison grid for Eurorack sampler options. The goal is to provide enough information to identify and narrow the options that interest you.
Not all modules that employ "sampling techniques" are included here; for example, digital delays also sample audio, but this is not a digital delay comparison. Only some of these modules can record/capture audio, but they can all replay audio on demand.
Eurorack samplers generally fall into—or overlap—five main types:
file player: these play audio data files, typically by triggers or gate, typically with an emphasis on 1v/o pitch control and enveloping; they may or may not have recording functionality
audio buffer: these devices focus on capturing (recording) and manipulating audio (snippets) in rudimentary ways, such as modulating sample rates, to produce delay or wavetable-like effects; these are more electronic than algorithmic
virtual tape: these use DSP techniques to play (typically longer) segments of audio in the style of a tape recorder, with an emphasis on variable speed, direction and edits (splices)
looper: these focus on simultaneously recording and playing (typically longer) ephemeral loops of audio, much like a guitar pedal looper
granular: these capture (typically ephemeral) audio and use DSP techniques to derive new audio through granular techniques
Many modules do some or all of the above, but there's nearly always some sort of bias built into the user interface.
