Title: [New Music / Soundart / klangkunst (Contemporary Music)... ]
Post by: Link on August 06, 2008, 11:44:10 AM

Pierre Schaeffer (* 14. August 1910 in Nancy; † 19.

Konzeptkunst und Konzeptmusik – Ein Theoriemodell des Konzeptualismus (Harry Lehmann)
Vortrag am 25.11.2018 in der Jazzschmiede Düsseldorf bei musik21 e.V. New Counterpoints

The Language Of The New Music - Documentary about Wittgenstein and Schoenberg, 1985
This is a film about Ludwig Wittgenstein and Arnold Schonberg; two men whose lives and ideas run parallel in the development of Viennese radicalism.
Both men emerged from the turmoil of the Habsburg Empire in its closing days with the idea of analyzing language and purging it with critical intent, believing that in the analysis and purification of language lies the greatest hope that we have.  They never met and might never have fully understood one another, because while the nature of their genius they found themselves alone breaking new ground of the very frontiers of their respective disciplines.  But their work springs from the same soil and shares a common ethical purpose, so that their ideas and methods echo and illuminate those of each other to a remarkable degree.

Tyler Adams explores perceptual dimensions of aural-spatial-visual-temporal relationships through installation, sculpture, video, and other media. Central to his work is a pure fascination with sound as a medium as well as a modality for perceptual understanding in broad contrast to vision. He holds a BFA from California Institute of the Arts, MFA from UCLA, and MS in Architectural Acoustics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

hans w. koch: composer - performer - soundartist
i am interested in impredictability on all levels of a musical work.
besides the creation of open musical forms for various ensembles, mostly including live-electronic and interdisciplinary aspects, i develop installations in mixed media. often the search for hidden aspects of everyday-tools leeds to sounds and musical structures. this also extends to the use of computers as musical instruments in a rather physical manner ...

Miya Masaoka — musician, composer, sound artist — has created works for koto and electronics, Laser Koto, field recordings, laptop, video and written scores for ensembles, chamber orchestras and mixed choirs. In her pieces she has investigated the sound and movement of insects, as well as the physiological response of plants, the human brain and her own body. Within these varied contexts her performance work investigates the interactive, collaborative aspects of sound, improvisation, nature and society.

Perich is inspired by the aesthetics of math and physics, and works with simple forms and complex systems. The challenge of elegance provokes his compositions for solo instruments, small ensemble and orchestra. As a visual artist, he works primarily with machines to create pen-on-paper drawings that explore the limits of traditional drawing through randomness and order. In 2004 he began work on 1-Bit Music, combining his music with primitive, hand-programmed electronics that investigate the foundations of digital sound.

We define sound works as: artistic endeavors that are primarily concerned with the use of sound, but fall outside of what is normally considered "music." This includes but is not limited to: recordings, radio transmissions, performances, installations, sound sculpture, site specific public art, and new media arts.

Sound artists Stephan Moore and Scott Smallwood began performing as the duo Evidence in 2001. Focusing on the universe of real-world sound, Evidence pours field recordings like water into their compositional and improvisational process, resulting in music that balances between tight organization and unregulated flow. Using recording equipment, laptops, and other electronic devices, Evidence creates music that deals with gradual change, improvised over time, sometimes atmospheric, sometimes pulsating, always texturally striking and unique. Resisting classification into a single genre, Evidence is equally at home performing in experimental venues, clubs, galleries, planetariums, and rooftops.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entartete_Musik (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entartete_Musik)

Asmus Tietchens (* 3. Februar 1947 in Hamburg; Pseudonyme Hematic Sunsets und Club of Rome) ist ein deutscher Komponist elektronischer Musik und Klangkünstler. ... ...

https://youtu.be/SZkR3PyHTs0

Morton S. "Mort" Garson (20 July 1924 – 4 January 2008) was a Canadian-born composer, arranger, songwriter, and pioneer of electronic music. He is best known for his albums in the 1960s and 1970s that were among the first to feature Moog synthesizers. He also co-wrote several hit songs, including "Our Day Will Come", a hit for Ruby and the Romantics. According to Allmusic, "Mort Garson boasts one of the most unique and outright bizarre resumés in popular music, spanning from easy listening to occult-influenced space-age electronic pop."

Colour and Sound
"The early history of this art was driven by an interest in color. In the eighteenth century, a Jesuit priest, Louis- Bertrand Castel, invented the first color organ. Others, including D.D. Jameson, Bainbridge Bishop, and A. Wallace Rimington, created color organs through the next century. These instruments, typically controlled by playing a pianostyle keyboard, bathed a screen in everchanging colored light....

[...] The Greek Mysteries included in their doctrines a magnificent concept of the relationship existing between music and form. The elements of architecture, for example, were considered as comparable to musical modes and notes, or as having a musical counterpart. Consequently when a building was erected in which a number of these elements were combined, the structure was then likened to a musical chord, which was harmonic only when it fully satisfied the mathematical requirements of harmonic intervals. The realization of this analogy between sound and form led Goethe to declare that "architecture is crystallized music." ...

A musical process is akin to a visual process, both are very similar for me in how I perceive time and space, but it is the influence of listening in music that often is the framework or perception of sound in my work
As a musician, Ben works with open reel tape, cassettes, field recordings and magnetic objects. This formed out of his interest in the pre-recorded sound as a live process in music. From preparations including magnets, motors, and pins amongst others, he has been developing a sound palette that explores time, space, texture, tonality, harmonics and decay in both improvisations and compositions. Current collaborations include duos with Helmut Lemke (tapes & longstrings, DE/UK), Lee Patterson (amplified objects, UK), Hainer Woermann (amplified cardboard, DE), Michael Vorfeld (lightbulbs, DE), and Jason Zeh (tape treatments USA).

Automated Noise Ensemble
Rob Gawthrop and Bob Levene have worked together as ANE since 2000.  Brought together by a common interest in sound and in particular  the actions that produce sound, and the process of its perception. The work explores noise and music by adapting,  re-inventing and constructing musical instruments, devices and structures.  These are played or activated electro-mechanically, usually live, through performance, exhibition  or on vinyl.  Although there is a material intent to the work, an irreverent attitude towards musical instruments belies an inherent humour.  The means of its production and the context and space of its presentation are integral to the experience for the viewer/listener. The physicality of the sound  and the apparent contradictions between what is seen and what is heard relate directly to the sensations produced in the listener.

The ARChive of Contemporary Music (ARC) is a not-for-profit archive, music library and research center located in New York City since 1985.
ARC contains more than three million sound recordings. That's 90 + million songs with the 2014 addition of 800,000 Cds. We preserve copies of each version of every recording, in all known formats, and have electronically catalogued more than 300,000 sound recordings – more than any other public, university or private library in America. ARC also houses more than three million pieces of attendant support material including photographs, videos, DVDs, books, magazines, press kits, sheet music, ephemera and memorabilia.
The value of ARC's collection is not only in the rareness of many of our recordings, but in the breadth, size and organization of the collection. For every signed and unique copy of an early Rolling Stones LP, there are hundreds of relevant, formative, relatively unknown recordings that contributed to its creation, and thousands that benefit from its existence. ...

TONEWHEELS is an experiment in converting graphical imagery to sound, inspired by some of the pioneering 20th Century electronic music inventions. Transparent tonewheels with repeating patterns are spun over light-sensitive electronic circuitry to produce sound and light pulsations and textures. This all-analog set is performed entirely live without the use of computers, using only overhead projectors as light source, performance interface and audience display. In this way, TONEWHEELS aims to open up the "black box" of electronic music and video by exposing the working processes of the performance for the audience to see.

bohemian drips is a Berlin based vinyl label with focus on capturing music performances in settings with distinctive acoustics. We challenge artists to explore and reinvent their sound through unique recording and production methods outside the studio: Using the interactions between music, architecture and atmosphere as a framework for creation, we've developed our own definition of the production processes behind a record.
By curating artists and spaces we provide a platform for a new form of artistic expression, captured live and in binaural audio by using 3D "Kunstkopf" technology. Thus, the listener of our records experiences a new perspective of sonic perception, being directly relocated to the actual recording scenario.
Initiated in 2011 as a playground for its very special idea of music, bohemian drips grew to actual form in late 2014 with the release of "Zuhause im Weltall". An LP featuring binaural recordings of six Berlin artists, who were invited to compose a piece of music for the acoustics of an 100 meter-long underground tunnel. This marks the starting point of the bohemian drips label and its continued effort to explore, create and provide outstanding sounds.

Suzanne Ciani - Flowers Of Evil (1969) FULL ALBUM
As a genuine vanguard of electronic music composition at the forefront of the modular synthesiser revolution in the late 1960s, Suzanne Ciani's forward-thinking approach to new music would rarely look to the past for inspiration, which makes this unheard composition from 1969 a rare exception to the collective futurist vision of Ciani and synthesiser designer Don Buchla. In choosing to adapt the controversial prose of French poet Charles Baudelaire, Suzanne would join the ranks of ongoing generations of pioneering musicians like Olivier Messiaen, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Serge Gainsbourg, Etron Fou Leloublan, Celtic Frost and Marc Almond (not forgetting Star Trek's William Shatner!), all equally inspired by the 19th century writer's works of "modernité" (modernity), a self-coined term dedicated to capturing the fleeting, ephemeral experience of life in an urban metropolis, best exemplified in his symbolic, erotic and macabre ode to Parisian industrialisation, Les Fleurs du mal (Flowers Of Evil).

Oraison, composed by Olivier Messiaen in 1937 for six Ondes Martenot, transcribed for Buchla 200e synthesizer and Haken Continuum Fingerboard controller and performed by Richard Lainhart in 2009. From the time I first touched the Haken Continuum, I'd wanted to use it to play a composition by Olivier Messiaen called "Oraison". I first heard "Oraison" years ago as a student of electronic music, and had fallen in love with its simple, beautiful harmonies and profound sense of mystery. "Oraison" is not only a lovely piece of music, but has historical interest too - it may be the first piece of purely electronic music written expressly for live performance. Also of note is that Messiaen re-arranged "Oraison" for cello and piano and used it for the fifth movement of "Quartet for the End of Time", which he composed in a German prisoner-of-war camp in 1941; the "Quartet" is one of the great classics of 20th-century music. "Oraison" ("prayer") is from a suite of pieces for six Ondes Martenot called "Fete des Belles Eaux" ("Celebration of the Beautiful Waters"), composed for the Paris International Exposition in 1937. The Ondes Martenot was among the first electronic instruments, and is still among the most expressive. The Continuum's own expressive qualities seemed at least the equal of the Ondes Martenot's, while allowing for polyphony and the possibility of performance of the work by a single player. I transcribed "Oraison" for my Buchla 200e/Continuum system, programmed the modern system in homage to the sound of the Ondes Martenot, and now offer this performance to you.

Ernst Krenek (* 23. August 1900 in Wien; † 22. Armin Küpper : "A rainy day in the pipe" Saxophon with a natrual Echo in the Pipeline
